Wood statuette, 'Rice Goddess in Red'

She delicately cradles a green sprout from the fields, symbolizing the abundant harvest to come. Sri is the consort of Lord Wisnu, the Hindu god of sustenance, and in Bali has been bestowed the responsibility of rice goddess. Alongside almost every rice field on the island can be found a shrine to her with her sacred image. Carved from crocodile wood and garbed in gilded red, this exquisite image comes from Nyoman Sedayatana.
